It optimized for throughput and ignored the actual variance — the human factor that caused every interesting outcome in every network he'd ever studied.

So he built a different kind of router. One that didn't route data. It routed attention — by first mapping the behavioral signatures that determine where attention flows, how it pools, how it gets spent. He fed it public behavioral research, dead crypto transaction graphs, social platform API data, and two years of his own session logs. He ran it for 72 hours straight. Then he shipped it, because that's what engineers do when they're broke and running out of time.

The router came online at 3:14 AM on a Tuesday. By noon, it had processed 40 million attention events across 12 social platforms and identified 4 distinct behavioral clusters with 94% stability across every dataset it touched. By end of week, three groups had noticed: a venture firm that saw a new kind of social layer, a the city street operator who understood immediately what it meant for territory, and a federal compliance office that flagged it as an unregistered intelligence instrument.

"He didn't mean to map the city. He was just trying to figure out why people pay attention to the things they pay attention to. The city was already there. He just turned on the lights."

The engineer disappeared from public record six months after the ship date. What he left behind was a live system, an open protocol, and a city that had already begun to reorganize itself around it. The router is still running. Nobody is sure who controls it now. Everybody is trying to find out.

That's the Accident. Not a disaster — an event. A before and an after. Amerikana Online is everything that happened after.

The Attention War

Before the Accident, attention was just a word media buyers used to justify ad rates. After it, attention became legible — traceable, quantifiable, tradeable. The router made that possible. When you can see exactly where attention is pooling, how deep it's going, how long it stays, and what makes it evaporate — you have something worth fighting over.

The war is not metaphorical. It runs through every feed, every surface, every public-facing screen in the city. Feeds are the primary battleground: a well-managed feed in a contested district generates more economic leverage than a block of storefronts. Feeds harvest attention passively. The city's faction operators have known this for years. The difference now is that the router makes it visible. When you can see the battlefield, you can win or lose deliberately.

Every citizen in Amerikana carries an attention signature — a behavioral fingerprint that predicts what they will notice, how long they'll engage, when they'll spend, and what they'll ignore. The router reads this signature in real time. Faction operators use it to target their moves. Citizens who understand their own signature can defend it. Most don't. Most are playing a game they don't know they're in.

"Your feed isn't showing you what's interesting. It's showing you what keeps you in the feed. There's a difference. Most people never learn it."

The war has fronts. Feed Rank is the primary contested metric — who controls the algorithmic priority in a given district's information layer. Stimulation Debt tracks how much artificial engagement has been pumped into a citizen's attention stack, and what it costs them cognitively when it unwinds. Signal-to-Noise Ratio measures the quality of a faction's broadcast — high-noise factions burn through audience trust fast and have to keep expanding. Low-noise operators with tight signals can hold territory for years with minimal spend.

The most dangerous players in the city are the ones who figured out that the Attention War is also an economy, and started treating it like one. They don't win by being loud. They win by understanding the math.

The City

Amerikana Online is not a simulation of a city. It is a city. The geographic layer maps to real districts, real broadcast coverage, real social and economic weight. The entry point is Phase 01 — the founding district, where the router first came online, and still the most contested territory in the network. Two districts are currently active for players. More are staged.

Industrial noir. Layers of infrastructure that outlasted whatever they were built for. High faction density, active Attention War across four theater layers. This is where new citizens land. The router runs hot here — more behavioral data per block than any other district in the network. Blast concentration is highest. Signal-to-noise is lowest. Hardest place to survive. Best place to learn.

Grand Rapids — Corporate District

The second district. Cleaner surfaces. Higher regulatory density. Board Enforcers have deep roots here — they built most of the civic infrastructure and their compliance dashboards pipe directly into city governance systems. The feeds are more controlled, the Blast index is lower, and the war is more procedural. Harder to see. Harder to leave once you're embedded.

Districts are not open worlds in the traditional sense. They are operational environments — each one with its own faction balance, ambient Blast levels, active Attention War status, and dominant harvest methods. Moving between districts requires resources. Holding territory in a district requires presence. The router tracks both.

More districts are staged: Cascade 231, The Corridor 734, Northern Signal 906. Each opens when the existing districts reach a critical attention mass that overflows into adjacent territory. The expansion is not designed — it's behavioral. The city grows the way attention grows: toward density, away from silence.

Blast

Blast is not a chemical. It's a state. The router discovered it as a byproduct of analyzing attention patterns: a specific configuration of engagement signals that produces a measurable neurochemical response in the citizen experiencing it. High-velocity novelty. Compressed emotional stakes. Social validation at the moment of maximum uncertainty. The city's attention infrastructure is optimized to produce Blast at industrial scale.

Faction operators figured out how to weaponize it early. A Blast event — a viral spectacle, a compliance crisis, a perfectly-timed whisper drop — doesn't just capture attention. It borrows forward. Citizens who experience Blast become temporarily more susceptible to the next Blast event. The debt accumulates. The router tracks it. Citizens who don't manage their Stimulation Debt become predictable — which means they become harvestable.

Blast is also the most efficient harvesting mechanism in the city. A single high-Blast event from the Warlords can deliver three weeks of passive attention revenue from the citizens it captured. The Enforcers learned to manufacture compliance crises for the same effect. Even the Ghost Network uses Blast — in smaller doses, in darker venues, but the mechanics are identical.

The mechanics have names because the router named them. When the system came online, it didn't just map attention — it labeled the dynamics it found. Citizens who gained access to the router's output could suddenly see the infrastructure they'd been living inside. Most didn't like what they saw. Some decided to learn to play it. That's how Amerikana Online began: as a city that had always been running this game, and a router that finally made it legible.

Your Slab

You arrived with a device. In the city it's called a Slab — not because of its shape, but because of what it holds. A Slab is not a phone or a terminal. It's the surface through which you interact with the city's layers. The router runs on it. The Slab is how you see, spend, earn, and fight.

Every Slab comes preloaded with four core instruments. They don't look like a game UI because they aren't one — they're operational dashboards, and the city uses the same data to evaluate you that you use to evaluate yourself. Every value displayed is live. Nothing is decorative.

WAR CHEST

Balance and Reserves

Your current liquid resources — denominated in $MOTION, with dead-token deposits shown separately. The city reads your War Chest depth and adjusts faction offer terms accordingly. Deep reserves get better terms. Shallow reserves get desperate offers. The city knows what you have.

API CREDITS

Operational Fuel

Every action the router takes on your behalf burns credits. Analysis, routing, observation, Mu-gate processing — all metered. Credits refill daily based on your faction standing and $MOTION holdings. Running dry means going dark. Going dark means losing territory.

COMMIT COUNTER

Action History

A running record of every irreversible action you've taken in the city. The commit counter is public. Other factions can see your activity rate and pattern. A clean counter looks inactive. A noisy counter looks reckless. The cadence is a signal.

DRIFT DETECTOR

Alignment Signal

The router's real-time read on whether your actions are aligned with your declared operating doctrine or diverging from it. Drift is normal. High drift over multiple sessions generates an options card — the router presents alternatives, not judgments. You decide. It tracks.

The Slab also carries your session state — your faction alignment, your accumulated behavioral data, your current district position, and your attention signature. When you pick it up again after being away, the city has continued running without you. Your Drift Detector shows what moved while you were gone. The city doesn't pause. It accumulates.
